For most people the Somme signifies one day – 1 July 1916 – the day the British Army suffered nearly 60,000 casualties, its greatest ever loss in a single day. But the actual battle raged until November and saw massive fighting again in 1918. What remains is truly awesome.

Itinerary

The Somme

Tour commences 9.30am at Lille Europe Station. Your guide will be waiting at the Meeting Point on the main concourse.

Relive the tragedy and heroism with the help of a specialist battlefields guide in an unforgettable tour. Trek across the Somme battle sites, from Delville Wood to the Welsh memorial at Mametz Wood, and witness the huge Lochnagar mine crater and the sunken road where the Accrington Pals were virtually wiped out. See Sausage Valley, the Pozieres battlefield, Windmill Hill and Courcellette. Embrace the unforgettable atmosphere of Albert, the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing and the Ulster Tower, take a guided walk around the incredibly preserved Beaumont Hamel battlefield site and feel free to suggest visits to key sites of interest for an individually tailored itinerary.

The tour returns to Lille Europe Station at around 6.30pm.

We recommend that you do not make onward connections before 7.30pm, in case of traffic delays.
